Diabetes Center

     The Diabetes Center located in the Mississippi County Health Department is a self-management education center. Our mission is to provide education with an emphasis on preventative care to those diagnosed with the disease. The team of instructors delivers comprehensive education through group classes and/or individual instruction. Our staff is dedicated to providing quality services to help individuals with diabetes and their families understand the disease and learn to manage it so they can lead normal, active lives. Services of the Diabetes Center are free of charge and include:

Blood Sugar Testing
Blood sugar testing is available on a daily basis. No appointment is necessary.

Diabetes Self-Management Classes
Diabetes self-management education classes are offered in a series of four classes in which the following topics are discussed: overview of diabetes, dietary management, role of exercise, diabetes medications, blood sugar monitoring,

prevention of complications, stress management, and goal setting. Participants who attend all four classes receive a free diabetes management planner. Blood glucose monitors are provided based on need and availability. Class size is limited and you must register to attend.

One-On-One Counseling
One-on-one counseling is provided to customize education for each person with diabetes. A registered dietitian will conduct an assessment to determine nutritional needs and develop an individualized meal plan. Other special needs related to diabetes self-management are addressed.

The Resource Center
The Resource Center provides the most current education materials and pamphlets, as well as computer access to diabetes websites and self-study modules. The public is welcome to access the Resource Center during regular business hours.

Community Outreach Programs
Community outreach programs are conducted in accessible locations throughout the county. The programs include a presentation on various topics related to diabetes, education materials, and blood glucose screening. Call the Diabetes Center to schedule an outreach program for your group or organization.

Wednesday 7:00 am – 4:30 pm
Diabetes self-management education classes are offered on Tuesday evenings 5:30 – 7:30 pm.
